Well…you may be wondering what brought us here. That’s okay, we’re still wondering too. I currently write to you from Taos, New Mexico, where Greg’s family has some pretty sweet digs.
I bet you’re wondering what the hell brings us to New Mexico. Well, we’re currently in the middle of a cross-country move from Seattle to New York. Did I mention we will only be there for 4 months? This is what sane people do, right? Let me explain…
Anywho, Greg was all “Oh boy Army! This will be fun!” when he began basic training in August 2001. Then September 11th rolled around, and no explanation is needed other than his class was told, “If you joined for the college money, you’re shit out of luck”. We all know what happened next.
Ultimately, the goal was for Greg to get his degree and return to the Army as an officer. For three years, we planned our lives off of the idea that come September 2014, Greg would be going through OCS and I would be hanging around eating bon-bons. What can I say guys, I dream big.
Greg worked his ass off at the University of Washington and made me prouder than when my dog took the world’s biggest crap directly into my sister’s shoe after we had an argument (love you, Erin). We did it all – we began talking to a recruiter a year prior, did all the paperwork, Greg killed the ASVAB, completed and repeated the PT test, on and on. All of the fun things you do as a prior-enlisted trying to become an officer.
Then, we were finally done. All the paperwork submitted. All the inspections/poking and prodding done. All the CRAP was finally finished. Now, the waiting game. Our lease ended August 15th, and we sat living amongst boxes waiting for a board date. Can you tell we are awesome at planning? We extended our lease every few days in hopes we would soon get a board date.
I like to joke, but this is the time where I really need to talk about how FUCKING AWESOME our family, friends, and my bosses are. We couldn’t have gotten through this waiting period without the offers of couches, dog-sitting, phone calls, and more. If I were a Christian blogger, this is where I would say #blessed.
